Sage sat in his office with his head between his hands. He was struggling emotionally after the phone call he had had with Laura’s parents. As he had thought, Laura had not returned from Afghanistan after the bombing nor had they heard of any other news about her. For her family, she had died and that was it, case closed. Sage found it extremely unfair how someone could claim to be someone who wasn’t alive. Causing people to remember the pain of losing them in the process was just cruel. He wanted to make Lorriane pay for what she’d done. It was disgusting and inhumane. When Sage had been talking to Laura’s parents, he could hear the pain in their voices as they spoke about their daughter. He couldn’t imagine the pain they had gone through when they lost her, no parent should live through losing a child.

A part of him wished he could go back in time and change how everything had played out. He would've tried harder to convince Laura not to go on the mission. It would've been the only way for him to save her considering he couldn't save her from the bombing. There had been times when he had thought he could've gotten to her sooner when the bomb went off but he also knew that wouldn't have worked either; she was too far away from him. He didn’t know how things would’ve worked out between them but at least she still would’ve been alive.

His mind traveled back to his conversation as he waited for Mia to arrive back at the house.

“Hi, am I speaking to Mr. Johnson?” Sage asked when someone had picked up.

“Yes, this is him. How may I help?”

It was clear he hadn’t recognized Sage’s voice. He wasn’t surprised though as he hadn’t spoken to them since the funeral.

“Mr. Johnson… I don’t know if you remember me but my name is Sage,” he said. He wanted to make sure that Laura’s father was comfortable talking to him first before he jumped into asking any questions. It was hard enough just having to think about the fact that he would have to bring up something so painful.

“There’s only one Sage I know of. After all, that’s a very unique name. It’s been a while, son, how have you been?” he asked through the phone. Sage’s heart ached when he called him ‘son’. He couldn’t bear breaking their hearts.

“I’m doing well thanks, sir, and how are you?” Sage replied. He felt like it was a very stupid question to ask because after two years they probably still felt the same pain as the day they had found out about the incident.

“Oh, we’re doing alright considering the circumstances,” he said.

Sage felt sorry for the Johnsons. He had lost someone he loved but for him, he had managed to move on. For them, it would be not as easy as that. Sage could remember the day of the funeral and how heartbroken Laura’s parents had been. Seeing them sobbing was engraved in his mind.
